IRSA President Alessandro Bonanno recently traveled to Seoul, Korea to meet with others about the 2008 World Congress which will be hosted by ARSA at the KINTEX Convention Center in Goyang City, Korea. Goyang City is a rural community conveniently located near the Seoul International Airport of Inchon and the KINTEX convention Center is a modern meeting facility featuring high tech meeting rooms, restaurants and cafeterias. The local national host is the Korean Rural Sociological Society. Alessandro was accompanied by Yoshio Kawamura, Program Chairman for the upcoming World Congress. They met with Ki-Whan Chung, Local Arrangement Chair, Oakla Cho, IRSA Second vice President, Ji Woong Cheong, Local Arrangement Deputy Chair, and other members of the Executive Committee of the Korean Rural Sociological Society to review the venue for the meetings and to discuss program content. A full draft program and related details, such a as call for session chairs and a call for papers, will be vetted with the IRSA Council at its mid-term meeting in Durban in July, 2006 after which they will be posted to this website. |

We would be grateful if you could register by June 15. After that, we can not guarantee that you will be listed in the Book of Abstracts or the congress program due to time limits in the printing process. Hotel rooms have been held until June 15, and after that it will be very difficult to find available hotel rooms in Trondheim due to other large events in the same period. The excursions are also starting to get fully booked.
So please - if you have not registered yet and would like to participate - please do as soon as possible. |

If you believe that you meet the following criteria, and can provide the commitment that is required, please contact Frank.Vanclay@utas.edu.au before 19 June 2004.
The ideal Program Chair needs to:
- be an internationalist, that is have an understanding of international
issues and an international perspective;
- have a special interest in Asia as a region and preferably familiarity with Korea;
- have a thorough understanding of rural sociology as a discipline, and have a broad overview of a range of areas of rural sociology;
- have good organisational skills and preferably experience consistent with organising a large event such as a World Congress;
- be an experienced team member/leader, and have an understanding about the issues involved in a cross-cultural setting;
- have a good understanding of what IRSA is about (as an organisation) or the potential to develop this understanding quickly;
- have a degree of standing in the profession of rural sociology, preferably at an international level;

Unfortunately, Program Chair, Mark Shucksmith, has been admitted to hospital for surgery. Indications are for a positive outcome and he is expected to return to work in the new year.
The conference organisers and the IRSA President have appointed Dr. Lynda Herbert-Cheshire from the University of Queensland as Deputy Program Chair to takeover from Mark during his recovery period.
