S. M. Sultan
Born: Narail, Bangladesh 1923.

Dhaka art critic, Mohtram wrote about S.M. Sultan in 1987:

"Sultan made everyone of his figures like that giant who was crucified one Friday because everyday is a Friday for the toiling masses of the sub-continent. Their existence is a saga of unending suffering, but undaunted......The bulging and knotty muscles speak not only of strength but of determination to overcome or rather 'welcome each rebuff' ... This primeval callosity is natural to those who subsist on the soil as you have them in the Harvesters of Peter Breugel and in the Potato-Eaters of Vincent van Gogh ... The female forms of the master are just the opposite of his male figures. They are sweetness and softness incarnate. The central theme of the paintings of Sultan is man in his relationship with soil and water."

The artist died in 1994. His Institute and collections are now administered by the Bangladesh Government.
